| Honor Roll - Heralding Our Members Peace Doll Honorees WILPF Santa Cruz has a unique way to recognize the contributions of it’s members. Once a year, the current holder of a simple wooden doll chooses another member for their commitment to peace and gives her or him the doll. On the doll it says in Swedish: “Frida of Peace from Friend to Friend.” Frida, the name of our Peace Doll, means peaceful or tranquil. Frida was first given to Patricia Schroeder in 1986 by the Swedish hosts at an international peace conference co-sponsored by WILPF, which was held in the shadow of the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor meltdown. Patricia was told to pass the doll to a friend who worked for peace and thus was born our branch tradition. Each year the current holder of the doll chooses a new home for Frida. | Memorial Funds The Santa Cruz Branch has established two memorial funds to use for special projects. Alice Davis and Harriet Blue were two remarkable women active in WILPF. Donations in their names were placed in special accounts to recognize and continue the wonderful work of these tireless women. Funds have been used for things as different as sponsoring a young girls’ soccer team, the Undaunted Doves, and allowing local activists to attend conferences and events. Contact us at wilpf@wilpf.got.net or call 831/457-6797 if you would like to make a contribution in the name or Alice or Harriet or any other deserving WILPFers. |
